Sample Preparation and Shipping
- If you intend to send samples to the Biomarker Core, please follow these instructions to ensure uniform collection and processing.
- Collect >10 cc urine (if available), perform urine dipstick (Bayer multistix 8SG, run on Clinitek 50 automated reader). If collecting Foley samples: obtain urine from ‘urimeter’ or Foley tubing in order to obtain most recently voided urine.
- After collection, centrifuge urine samples at 3500 rpm for 10 min.
- Pour supernatant into fresh tube, mix gently.
- Examine urine sediment after resuspending pellet.
- Make four 1ml aliquots of the supernatant in sterile 2cc Micro tubes (-80 compatible: Sarstedt 72.693.005).
- Add protease inhibitor tablet to remaining urine (1/2 tablet to 5cc: “Complete MINI” Roche Diagnostics #11 836 153 001).
- Make four 1ml aliquots of the protease-treated supernatant in sterile 2cc Micro tubes (-80 compatible: Sarstedt 72.693.005).
- Freeze at -80°C within 2 hours of sample collection.
- Aliquots must be made in either snap-top eppendorf tubes or screw-capped cryovials, as pictured below.
- Please make sure that you use snap-top eppendorf tubes or screw-capped cryovials that can fit in any benchtop centrifuge. The following types of tubes will not be accepted:
- Please label tubes using permanent marker, rather than sticking any labels to the side, which can potentially come off during transport or while thawing samples in a water bath.
